The Black Sosa

$40.00

I created this to preserve the image of Sammy Sosa that I grew up on in the late 90s and early 2000s. We look at Sosa’s transformation now and we may laugh or make a mockery of it. I rather examine his transformation from a place of understanding and healing. There is an underlying sadness to the idea of a black man wanting to bleach his skin and erase it’s beauty and it’s essence. How could someone so prominent and iconic still not love the skin they’re born with? The same questions are asked about Michael Jackson, Lil’ Kim, and Vybz Kartel. Colorism is a byproduct of white supremacy. Part of dismantling that system is unconditionally loving our blackness and it’s many shades. Our love for our blackness has to be big enough for the people who can’t.
